West Menai (Heathcote Ridge) development

In December 2012, Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council announced their desire to rezone 865-hectare of land for new homes, employment and conservation in the West Menai area in the Sutherland Shire.

The Land Council proposes to develop 2,700 new homes, 70 hectares of employment land
and 514 hectares of conservation areas on a site it refers to as “Heathcote Ridge”.

This proposal has been consistently opposed by Sutherland Shire Environment Centre together with Sutherland Shire Council, National Parks Association and many other groups in the community.

A number of submissions have been lodged opposing this development.

A Voluntary Planning Agreement prepared by GLALC has been under consideration by the Minister since 1 March 2013.
