A celebration of two heroes
5 June, 2017, 1:00 am - 3:00 am AEST
Join us to pay tribute to Bob Walshe and Bill Ryan for their outstanding work in environment and social justice.
Bill and Bob, two well-known and well-loved Sutherland locals, have given many decades to some of the great campaigns last century and this century – fighting for equality, environmental protection and climate action.
In 1991, Bob Walshe OAM was the Foundation Chair of Sutherland Shire Environment Centre, a role he continued in for 10 years. He remains the Patron of SSEC. Over his 93 years, Bob has been a prolific writer and a great campaigner. He was instrumental in many key campaigns to protect local environmental icons. He initiated the annual Sydney Eureka Commemoration Dinner and the push to have Royal National Park given World Heritage status.
Bill Ryan, a 95 year old veteran of the Second World War Kokoda Campaign, has been arrested six times at climate action protests and blockades. His activism stretches back to the protests against the Vietnam War and Apartheid South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. Bill continues to be on the front line in some of the most significant actions against the coal industry.
