Our guest speaker this year is Su Morley, aka Steel City Sue, from Climate Action Newcastle. Newcastle is a famous coal town – exporting more coal than any other port in the world. Su Morley has been involved in some brilliant community-led initiatives to transition away from coal, including persuading traditional Newcastle bowling clubs to save money by switching to solar.
In March, Sutherland Shire Council unanimously passed a motion for Council to go carbon neutral by 2030, and to encourage the local business community to adopt cleaner climate strategies. We’re looking forward to hearing about Su’s experience at Newcastle and considering how similar action by Sutherland Shire Environment Centre members might support the positive initiative of our local Council.
