The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says urgent action to drastically reduce emissions is required to avoid catastrophic climate change. This means an immediate end to the expansion of the fossil fuel industry and a rapid transition to sustainable industries for workers and communities currently reliant on fossil fuels.

The new Labor government in NSW has taken power at a crucial time.

The fate of the world’s climate is hanging in the balance. But Labor is currently supporting continued expansion of fossil fuels, including backing the Santos Pilliga (Narrabri) gas project. This project, and many others, requires attacking the rights of First Nations people, with the NSW government currently backing hostile court action by Santos to override Gomeroi Native Title rights.

Labor is also continuing to support draconian anti-protest laws which can result in jail time for peaceful protest. This is squarely aimed at stopping climate activism, and is having a chilling effect on all movements for democracy and social justice.

This rally is an important action, at a critical time, and the coalition is organising around the following demands:

  • * No new fossil fuel projects, including Kurri Kurri, Narrabri, Beetaloo and Scarborough
  • * Stop the power companies profiteering: 100% publicly owned renewable energy by 2030
  • * Just transition now: funding for climate jobs, free education and training, liveable welfare
  • * First Nations justice: Stop Santos’ attack on Gomeroi Native Title
  • * Stop mining in Sydney’s water catchment
  • * End native forest logging
  • * No salt or toxin dumps in the Murray Darling Basin catchment.

We need real change on these issues. We need this government to act.
